U.S. State Taxation of foreign income

When you first move abroad, you are most likely moving from some state in the U.S. that considers you a resident to your overseas location. If you lived in a state that assesses income taxes you will need to know if you have an obligation to continue to file returns.  Each state has its own peculiar set of rules to determine this, while most consider domicile (being a resident at that place and intend to remain there for an indefinite period of time) and residence (you can have a residence in more than one place, and you can be resident in a place without being domiciled there).

The question you will have is to whether you must continue to pay income tax to that state.

The answer depends on several factors to consider.  You can click on the state maps below to give you more information to see how state taxation of foreign income is or isn't taxed.

Contact me (Nick) and tell me about your situation and I will get your taxes squared away.
